our history

about our hotel

A heritage building, the Holy Cross Monastery had its cornerstone laid on September 13th, 1931. Established not only to house the Irish Christian Brothers, but also to provide additional school accommodations, the Monastery was a welcomed addition to the church and the city of St. John’s.

Since 2014, Monastery Hotel has been under the ownership of Dion and Dora Finlay, stewards of The Leaside Group of Companies that include Leaside Manor, Compton House, Monastery Hotel, Leaside Executive Apartments, Arnold’s Cove Inn, Riverside Therapeutics, Landmark Events and Passport Media. “When the opportunity came along to take over this illustrious local institution, myself and Dora just couldn’t walk away. And now it is the crown jewel of our operations,” Dion explains. “We’ve always been people-focused in all our businesses, providing not only the very best in services and hospitality, but also in delivering consistently memorable experiences for our clients and guests.”

Today, Monastery Hotel continues to offer our visitors a fresh escape from not only the city of St. John’s, but also the whole world as we cater to both locals and tourists alike. With our range of services, convenient location, a professional and trained staff of over sixty, and so much more, we continue to bring a sense of peace and solitude as the building’s residents did before us.
